What was the appeal of a scrapbook store? We were looking for a business since we are retired - there is only so much television you can watch. We realized that to go into business, you need to find something that you're passionate about. Lynn sews and knits, but since she discovered scrapbooking it has become her real passion. And through our research, we discovered that it is a $2.5-billion industry.

Why this location?
We've lived in this area for 18 years, and we wanted to stay in the community and add to it. There wasn't another scrapbook store in the area, yet there are many families here and that is a big part of our market. It's also great that we can walk to our store. We have a grandchild in the high school across the street too, so we can be close to family. The space was available so it all worked out well.

Tell me about your classes.
As a client said, scrapbooking is the new quilting bee. People like to gather and chat and share their stories, and our classes starting in
October allow people to do that. Scrapbooking is about preserving family memories, and some people have always wanted to dive in but never have - our beginner classes will give them guidance. We will also have specialty classes, such as how to create a scrapbook
with family recipes. The specialty classes will give experienced scrapbookers a chance to get to the project that has been on the
back-burner. Our after-school club will give students in grades 8 to 12 a chance to express themselves.

Are there trends in the industry that influence your inventory?
Definitely. Since I love scrapbooking, I know all about the latest industry developments. One of the developments in scrapbooking is that
people are using the hobby to create home décor. Rather than just framing a photo, for example, scrapbooking papers and stickers and ribbons can be applied around the photo to create appealing personal artwork. Also, those who scrapbook often branch out into creating personal cards, so we can help customers with those supplies too.

What makes your store unique?
Since we are so new, owned by an avid scrapbooker, we have the latest and greatest. Lynn wanted to be sure we had everything that she often had a hard time finding. We have customers often comment that "we've never seen that before."

What type of businesses could benefit from working with Scrapbook City?
There are all sorts of businesses that could work with us. A photographer or photo shop would be one of the first to come to mind, since
scrapbooking works with many photographs. Any business that deals with special events or family occasions, such as the birth of a baby or a wedding - after all, scrapbooking is about preserving family memories. We can also host private get-togethers, so if any business is looking for a fun and different way to hold a social function, we can do that too.
